Mark T. Harris is a Portland, Oregon-based journalist and essayist. His writing appears in a variety of magazines, newspapers, and online news sites.
Harris is a featured contributor to "The Flexible Writer," fourth edition, by Susanna Rich (Allyn & Bacon/Longman, 2003); and "Guide to College Reading," sixth edition, by Kathleen McWhorter (Addison-Wesley, 2003). A former features writer for Nightingale-Conant's Insight magazine, Harris was for several years Choice Books columnist for Chicago's Conscious Choice magazine.
His notable contributions include "The Game of Life," a national cover story for Utne magazine on the psychological and health benefits of play in modern culture. Harris is also the author of a popular 2006 Dissent magazine expose, "Welcome to 'Whole-Mart'—Rotten Apples in the Social Responsibility Industry." In 2003, another investigative report, "Could Marijuana Be Legal in Illinois?" told the story of glaucoma sufferer Brenda Kratovil's efforts to enforce a little-known Illinois medical marijuana statute. This story for Chicago's Conscious Choice magazine was later widely reported by the Chicago Tribune and Fox News.
On the lighter side, he is a contributor to the recent best seller, “Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure,” By Larry Smith, Rachel Fershleiser (Harper Collins, 2008). His flair for the ironic earned his contribution a mention in The New Yorker and on National Public Radio.
As a professional writer and editor, Mark T. Harris is a contributor to a variety of industry health care journals, newsletters, magazines. Additionally, he has provided editorial assistance on book and writing projects for many organizations and individuals.
